The Fiery Furnaces’ sixth release in four years, Widow City ( Thrill Jockey), finds the brother-sister duo as frenetic and freaky as ever, unleashing herky-jerky riffs and surreal beat patter. A new album, however, means a new set of Pynchon-esque stanzas to internalize—a trying task. “I mess up a lot early on in the tour. If my mind wanders for a half second, if I can’t think of the first word, then I’m lost,” she says. “I really wish I had some voodoo-weird trick to memorize everything, but I don’t have a secret way. It’s just a physical thing.”
