On this humid evening, the North Carolina–based screwgrass
trio put themselves through an intense onstage workout,
and they had the sweat-destroyed shirts to prove it. “That’s
what we do every night,” explains singer/banjo player/kick
drummer Scott Avett. “We have a rule: You can’t walk away
dry, which is why there’s a lot of mildew in our bags.”
