The guide to how entertainers entertain themselves. This month:
“I like Will Ferrell.
“The first album I was
really into was The
Rise and Fall of Ziggy
Stardust. In the ’70s,
everybody was into
U.K. pop music like the
Bay City Rollers,
and it pissed me off.
I found Bowie and
T. Rex more interesting.
It was so adventurous.”
The glam-rocking star of Youth Without
Youth.
He made that movie
about ice-skaters
[Blades of Glory] that
had me falling over
laughing—partially
because he’s very good
and partially because
my mother used to
make us kids watch
ice-skating when we
were younger, which
was beyond me. I still
don’t understand why.”
“The first film I did was
a TV movie called Made
in Britain. The director
was a guy named Alan
Clarke, who had made
a [prison] film called
Scum. It was one of the
reasons I wanted to
be an actor. I’d always
thought of acting as
something posh
people did, but when
I got into films I could
relate to, I wanted
to get involved.”
“My favorite travel
gadget is my Canon
EOS-1D digital camera.
I love to keep a record of my various journeys.
I’ve always taken
pictures, but they are
mostly just for me and
my friends. We shot
Youth Without Youth
in Romania, and the
shots I have from there
are gorgeous. It’s an
extraordinary country.”
“I’ve recently
rediscovered George
Orwell. I read Animal
Farm and 1984 in
school but never
really considered his
other work. He has
a particular way of
writing about England.
It’s the sort of thing I
hated reading because
I was forced to in
school, but now that
stuff fascinates me.”
“I quite like TiVo,
because I hate
commercials. If
something has
commercials, I just
switch it off. TiVo is a
great invention, in that
you don’t have to have
that shit in your life.
Apart from billboards,
I suppose, but I try to
keep my eyes down.”
“Whoever handles
programming at Turner
Classic Movies is really
good. They’ll spend
an entire day on one
actor, like Cary Grant,
whom I love. He’s
terrifically funny. I think
comedy acting is one
of the hardest things
in the world to do.”
“Neil Young is one of
my favorite artists of
all time. I was asked to
interview him once for
TV, and I didn’t know
that much about him.
Then I listened to his
music, and it absolutely
blew me away. Even
the stuff that isn’t great
is still pretty good. I’d
definitely put him up
there with legends like
the Clash and Hendrix.”
