IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED about the evolution of a cover story from inception to completion, this month provides a compelling example.
So, if you have a moment…
We initially planned to run a short interview with Pete Doherty last November, closer to the U.S. release of his band Babyshambles’ latest album, Shotters Nation, which surprised many of us at Spin HQ with its delightfully shambolic vibe and ace tunes. We knew what Doherty was capable of during his tenure with the Libertines, but now we finally realized what all the fuss was about in the U.K., where despite being a tabloid fixture, he’s become something of a folk hero. When London correspondent Nick Duerden’s chat kept getting postponed because of Doherty’s court dates and rehab stints, and we started hearing reports suggesting the musician was the healthiest he’d been in years, we thought we’d expand the piece into a full feature. No one here wanted to edit or read yet another article about this guy getting loaded and putting himself and others in harm’s way; we were hoping to tell a different tale, one that would track the efforts of this inveterate substance abuser to get clean and finally take ownership of his artistry. But perhaps we were getting ahead of ourselves. As Duerden found out while reporting the story, a new turmoil envelops Doherty on an almost daily basis, and so that happy ending will have to be written some other time.
Elsewhere in this magazine, novelist/essayist/actor/boxer Jonathan Ames, who wrote of his memorable encounter with Marilyn Manson in our June 2007 issue, goes dancing with rock romantic Lenny Kravitz
(sort of), and music editor Charles Aaron tackles the Led Zeppelin reunion from the front row (well, maybe a few rows farther back). We also turn the spotlight on eight new bands we think will make a big splash in 2008 and direct you to hotly anticipated albums so spankin’ new some of them haven’t been completed yet.
Enjoy the issue. And Pete, if you’re reading this, we hope you’ve resolved some of yours.
