1 Kidz in the Hall “WORK TO DO (OBAMA CAMPAIGN)” Over a bubblin’, we-gotta-make-it sample of the ’ 72 Isley Brothers jam “Work to Do,” this Ivy League rap duo solicit your support for our next president.
2 Army Navy “SAINTS” A splashy jangle of distorted guitars and winsomely defiant vocals—like Teenage Fanclub’s Bandwagonesque all jacked up on Mountain Dew—that’s the feel-good nonhit of the winter.
3D n3J Blaqstarr, feat. Rye Rye “SHAKE IT TO THE GROUND” Baltimore teen rapper Rye Rye nyah-yahs over club producer Blaqstarr’s echoing synth glyphs like she’s got Jimmy Jazz at Mondawmin Mall on lockdown.
4 Bon Iver “SKINNY LOVE” Recorded in a remote Wisconsin cabin, Justin Vernon’s yearning falsetto is so assuredly felt on this acoustic lament that he could be narrating the end of your next relationship.
5 Burial “ARCHANGEL (BOY 8-BIT REMIX)” Burial’s original is like a house diva track that’s dreadfully scrambled in your head long after clubland is shuttered. 8-Bit’s goosed-up remix restarts the party.
6 These New Puritans “ELVIS” Tense, paranoid British youth with infectious bass fuzz and ranting vocals: “We’re being watched by experts!” “I can’t find the words!” If anybody calls it nü-rave, cosh ’em.
7 Foxboro Hot Tubs “STOP DROP AND ROLL” Green Day’s latest prank (à la the Network) features this unmistakably Hives-ish garage-punk raver. Mad fun, but commercially unviable. Just ask Howlin’ Pelle.
8 Amanda Diva “SUPAWOMAN” Actor, singer, Def Poetry Jam vet, Best Week Ever talking head, and DJ Drama Aphilliate finally finds her MC flow on a soulfully swinging, ragga-tinged gust of female affirmation.
9P l9rofessor Murder “FLEX-I T FORMULA” These polyrhythmic punks are audibly enthused, but not in ieu of bright ideas. Like ESG as a boyish collegiate glee club, and this is their punchiest groove yet.
10 Asobi Seksu “THEN HE KISSED ME” From a gorgeously packaged seven-inch, these New Yorkers give the Crystals/Phil Spector classic a dream-pop swirl and plop it into a waffle cone. Who needs Tasti D-Lite?
11 Riskay, feat. Aviance and Real “SMELL YO DICK” An embittered young Florida rapper institutes a new policy for her unfaithful love interest. Catchy, timeless, and with a positive, proactive message.
12 The Futureheads “BROKE UP THE TIME” Returning to the band’s frenetic 2004 salad days, this is a glorious blur and chug of raw guitar as singer/guitarist Barry Hyde winningly assails revisionist history.
131R p3ingfinger “VIKING FUNERAL” Produced by emo-punk mentor J. Robbins, Tracy Wilson, singer for ’90s unks Dahlia Seed, offers the kind of straightforwardly lovely electro-pop testimony that Björk has sadly forsaken.
14 Villains “THRILLA” L.A. remix trio extracts a few key slivers from Michael Jackson’s disco-werewolf epic and creates a blissfully stuttery electro-funk strut that Daft Punk should snap up anon.
15 Amplive, feat. Too Short and Zion “NUDE” Produced by half of rap duo Zion 1, this warmly disorienting remix of In Rainbows’ swooniest moment floats along like a P.M. Dawn bedtime fable.
Snoop Dogg “Sensual Seduction”
Snoop gets his Don Cornelius on in this clip that zaps back to old-school Roger Troutman. Shot with that ’70s bong-water-on-the-film look, the footage shows off all the stuff he hijacked from the Soul Plane prop truck: bedazzled bell-bottoms, keytars, and at least one UFO. Its thesis? The same as all his other videos’: Being Snoop Dogg is really awesome.
Foo Fighters
“Long Road to Ruin”
Recalling their classic comedy videos like “Big Me” and “Learn to Fly,” the Foos bury tongues in cheeks as Dave Grohl plays Davy Grolton, a heartbroken teen idol trapped by his success. All the most over-the-top tropes of Mexican soap operas and Lifetime original movies, plus the end of Thelma & Louise, are combined for four minutes of rockin’ tomfoolery.
Scarface, feat. Trey Songz “Girl You Know” The Houston vet returns to the game to confess that he suffers from gametophobia, the fear of marriage. But it’s okay, because he and his bride-to-be are cheating on one another anyway. Trey Songz remedies the situation with an angelically crooned hook, and even after the nuptials are called off, everybody named Scarface goes home happy.
The White
Stripes
“ Conquest”
Jack White dons a
matador’s outfit to
tell a classic tale: Man
meets bull, man
challenges bull, bull aligns
himself with neglected
drummer, things end
badly for man. “Conquest”
could very well be a
statement on the
relationship between Jack
and Meg, but it was
probably just a great
excuse for him to brandish
a red cape and wear a
kooky hat.
