Amanda Petrusich Writer, Duffy (page 56) > “Driving from Cardiff to Nefyn was one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever done,” says Petrusich, 28. “The Welsh highway map looked like a toddler had scribbled circles on a blank piece of paper.” Her book It Still Moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and the Search for the Next American Music (Faber & Faber) is out this month. Simon Reynolds Writer, My Bloody Valentine (page 78) < A longtime fan, Reynolds crossed paths with reclusive MBV mastermind Kevin Shields in 1991. “I saw him in my local launderette,” he recalls. “Turned out he and the band were living up the road from me in a squat in South London.” Reynolds, who now lives in Manhattan, is the author of the post-punk history Rip It Up and Start Again (Penguin). Favorite MBV song: “Slow”
Fergus Padel Photographer, Black Kids (page 74) < Padel noticed immediately how Black Kids’ grueling schedule has affected the young quintet. “They were very calm and a little tired from touring,” she says, “but they seemed very glad to see flowers and get some sun.” The Londoner has also shot for Dazed and Confused and Another magazine. Favorite musician as a teenager: “Nena, but later Tom Waits.”
