3 DOORS DOWN SALUTES T HE
CITIZEN/SOLDIE R
3 DOORS DOWN burst onto the alternative-rock scene in the ‘90s with their now-classic “Kryptonite,” but they refused to be pegged as a one-note, one-hit wonder. 3 Doors Down went on to craft three more album s that showed their range, talent, and culturally and politically pertinent voice. With their latest album, simply titled 3 Doors Down, they tackle not only topics like what it means to grow up, gain self-acceptance, and find love again, but also about what it means to be a soldier and a citizen. In “Citizen/Soldier,” a song they wrote for the National Guard, 3 Doors Down show that they are not just another rock band— they are a rock band with a message of encouragement, gratitude, and support for our National Guard.
Greg, Chris, Brad, Matt, and Todd of 3 Doors Down talk about why “Citizen/Soldier” was so important for them to write, and what the National Guard means to each of them. To see their video, go to guardcitizensoldier.com.

GREG UPCHURCH (Drums): We’ve tried to do the best we can to show some gratitude towards the National Guard and the military and all the armed forces.
“GOD BLESS YOU, AND THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO, AND THANK YOU FOR MY FREEDOM.”
— BRAD ARNOLD, 3 DOORS DOWN
TODD: They’re over there giving up a lot for us, so we’re going to continue to keep going over there and supporting those guys. Without the National Guard, we wouldn’t be what we are today.
CHRIS HENDERSON (Guitar): I’m always attracted to doing something for the military. I was in the Navy myself, so it’s just an opportunity for me.
TODD HARRELL (Bass): We’re all from the Biloxi, Mississippi–Gulf Coast area and the Guard definitely lent a hand to those guys.
BRAD: I’m proud to support them. They got my support until the day I die.
BRAD ARNOLD (Vocals): We’ve played shows for the troops, and it’s just a thrill to go over there and see the level of excitement on the men’s and women’s faces when you show up to play a show, and you see them out there g etting to jam for a night, man. It”s the l east that I can do.
BRAD: We were out of town when the hurricane hit and we came back eight days later, and there they were. The National Guard was already in our home town passing o ut food.
GREG: Whenever I meet somebody who’s in the military, I make a point to stop and talk to them and thank them for what they do for our country.
CHRIS: There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about each and every one of them in some capacity.
MATT ROBERTS (Guitar): Being on the ground there, we saw how the Guard operatedandworkedtohelppeople, and that we actually need their presence.
TODD: We want to thank you guys for what you give up and what you make possible for people around the world.
CHRIS: To write a song for the National
Guard…I didn”t even need to think about it. It didn”t matter why or what. It was just automatically “yes.”
BRAD: If I could say one thing to all the men and women in the military, it would be “God bless you, and thank you for what you do, and thank you for my freedom.” ★
