C . It’s what we have been promised and what we’ve long desired. Okay, so the economy tanking was not exactly the shi t we were hoping for. Barack Obama’s election as the 44th president of the United States, however, was the highlight of a year packed with remarkable achievements, particularly with regard to the universe inhabits. There was Lil Wayne’s first-week million-plus sales of
Tha Carter III, despite the availability of tons of free Weezy music leading up to its release and the fact that few artists appear to be selling anything anymore. There was the arrival of the long-gestating Chinese Democracy. And, for the second time since 2006, cover fellas TV on the Radio (above) took top honors in our annual ranking of the best new albums. This was also the year that, while others shrank, became (literally) America’s biggest major music magazine.
You might have noticed a few other physical changes in the issue you’re holding. Namely, we’ve redesigned much of the magazine—most significantly the first third, including a complete overhaul of the Noise section, which now features shorter, snappier pieces and lots more to look at. I’ll let our design director, Devin Pedzwater, explain: “The goal was to offer a fresh take on our favorite parts and shake out those that seemed stale, while introducing a few new ones. We also wanted to give readers a little more eye candy and better showcase our award-winning photography.” You’ll see some more tweaks in the months ahead, but for now, a tip of my slightly soiled John Deere ball cap to Devin and his crew.
