A new book celebrates Andy Warhol’s album covers
“I’m Andy Warhol, I’d like to do a record jacket for you.” So opens Andy Warhol: The Record Covers 1949 1987, Catalogue Raisonné (Prestel, $75)— and judging by the 51 sleeves inside, Warhol must have reiterated that desire as often as he silk-screened soup cans. The book, which inspired the “Warhol Live” exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (running through January 18), showcases what author Paul Maréchal calls “the American master’s most consistent creative vehicle,” ranging from Warhol’s rst job, doing spot illustration for an album of Aztec music, to a grayscale watercolor portrait for 1955’s Count Basie, to his iconic, interactive covers for Sticky Fingers and The Velvet Underground & Nico. Maréchal’s meticulous research on each cover, along with supplementary anecdotes— including Warhol’s brief plan to front a rock band featuring minimalist composer La Monte Young—shows how deeply music in uenced the artist’s life and work. His 15 minutes keep ticking and ticking. SARAH DUPUIS
LISTENING IN
You grew up in Omaha. Did your parents monitor what you
listened to? I was into really nasty, dirty rap when I was 12. I
would, like, dissect Too $hort’s lyrics by writing them all down
in a notepad. My dad found it, and he ipped his shit. I didn’t
get my hands on any Too $hort after that. They were totally
happy when I moved on to Nirvana. When was the last time
you listened to your ex-boyfriend Kid Rock’s music? It’s
not something I listen to regularly. But I don’t avoid it.
He’s got a beautiful voice and he’s a great country
musician, which not a lot of people realize. I would
love to see him do an album where he really gets
to explore that more. What’s the lamest
album that you love? Olivia Newton-John’s
Greatest Hits rocks my fucking world. Back in
the day, I’d take my ghetto blaster and I’d
press “record” in front of the TV screen any
time she sang in Grease or Xanadu. So when I
played it back, I’d hear something about “the
hands of fate” and then a bunch of static and my
brother screaming in the background. Who comes
after Radiohead on your iPod? The Rakes.
I heard my husband [director Kyle Newman] play their song “Open Book,” and I loved it. What song would you put on a mix tape
for someone you wanted to impress? Gary Jules’ version of
“Mad World.” What was your first concert? 311 at the Ranch
Bowl in Omaha. They were our dope hometown band before
they blew up. I was a freshman at the same school as the lead
singer and all the kickass Saddle Creek Records kids. I don’t
think Conor Oberst was at this show, but it was de nitely
the place to be. They were an interesting mix of ska and
hip-hop. My friends and I were really proud of them.
What album do you play on repeat? I am obsessed
with Coconut Records’ Nighttiming. Jason
Schwartzman and I are tight ever since we did
[the 2002 comedy] Slackers together. When
I went to see Phantom Planet with Zooey
Deschanel, I remember thinking he was a
maniac on drums, but I didn’t realize he was
such a great singer until Nighttiming. Name an
artist you once were a fan of but can’t bring
yourself to listen to anymore. Mazzy Star. That was my
girly phase, and it’s over now. PHOEBE REILLY
