Lily Allen (page 40)
“Styling celebrities is hard,
because you don’t want to
strip them of who they are,”
says Plewka. Luckily, Allen
brought personal flair to the
“kitsch-grunge” shoot. “She’s
wearing her own panties. They,
as much as Vivienne Westwood’s
corset, make the cover photo
so iconic.” The Londoner has
also styled for Vogue Italia and
Purple. Favorite Lily Allen song:
“Everything’s Just Wonderful”

Brandon Flowers (page 70)
For their shoot, Lillegraven met
Flowers at a Nevada casino, but
he wasn’t the only one making
an introduction. “Some people
recognized Brandon and came
over,” says the photographer.
“They said they knew his uncle.
He had no idea who they were
talking about.” The Los Angeles
resident has also shot for GQ,
Entertainment Weekly, and
ESPN. Favorite Killers song:
“Somebody Told Me”
Animal Collective (page 50)
The New York–based writer
caught Animal Collective at a
relaxed moment at the Dream
House exhibition. “The guys were
psyched to take off their shoes
and just lie down,” he says,
adding that nostalgia may have
been a factor. “Avey Tare took his
wife there one of the first times
they hung out.” Battaglia is an
editor for The Onion’s A. V. Club.
Favorite Animal Collective
song: “Street Flash”

Imperfect Harmony (page 62)
For Roose, who profiled neo-
barbershop quartet OC Times,
old-timey style runs in the family.
“My dad sings in a quartet, and I
was always a little embarrassed
to admit it,” he says. “Now I’m
thinking I should join him. It
might get me laid!” The Unlikely
Disciple, the Brown University
senior’s first book, is out next
month from Grand Central. Song
he’d like to see barbershopped:
“Lollipop,” by Lil Wayne
