11. 20 P. M. After wooing a packed Bowery Ballroom,

the band—singer Gary Lightbody, bassist Paul Wilson, drummer Jonny Quinn, guitarist Nathan Connolly, and keyboardist Tom Simpson—sign autographs for some tenacious fans (mostly MILFs with faint Irish brogues). Two voluptuous twentysomethings dressed like twins beg the band to come “rock” with them. The guys decline, with Connolly admitting they’re “not very rock.”

11. 58 P.M. The band pile into a van and head to the Houndstooth, a bar they partly own near Times

Square. Though exhausted—they flew in from England that day—they’re punch-drunk. Simpson, in a mock hillbilly accent, inexplicably starts talking about pies: “ Blueberry pie, rhubarb pie!” Lightbody joins him—“Oh, I love hot pie. I got 14 back on the porch”—before collapsing in a giggle fit. “I think I’m having a heart attack,” he says.

12. 20 A.M. Stragglers from the show, music-biz folks,

older Irish gents, and even Wilson’s ex-fiancée (“It’s kind of awkward,” he admits) greet them at the bar. “I’m so tired,” Lightbody says. “Times like these, I get like a gremlin given water. All screwy.” A man hands him a promo coaster for their latest album, A Hundred Million Suns. On it is a one-word blurb that reads essential!—to which Lightbody quips, “I think the word ‘not’ was edited out.”

2. 32 A.M. Connolly and Wilson are the last men

(barely) standing. When Wilson complains of a back injury, a fellow patron offers him an Adderall to help him get through tomorrow’s hectic schedule. As he tucks it into a pocket, he removes a business card of one of the “twins” from the meet-and-greet. “They were hot!” he says. “And they were kissing each other.” So, then, why the brush-off? “I didn’t think we’d have anything to talk about,” he says, and then ambles over to join Connolly for one last round of Guinness.
