Sharon Jones makes sacrifices. “Outdoor festivals are crazy,” says the retro-soul spitfire. “They’re hot. There’s not enough toilets. There’s no room for me to do my makeup in. Sometimes I end up picking glass out of my feet. Not everyone’s a young rock’n’roller, baby!” So is performing worth all that trouble? The former corrections officer laughs. “People love my kind of music. And you know I love singing it for them.” Amen.
