How cool is it that you got your picture taken with a rock star before you were even born?”

That’s something our photo director, Michelle Egiziano (above), will be able to ask her son one day—presumably right before the kid responds, “Mommy, what’s a rock star?” As Bono jokes in this month’s cover story, he and his U2 bandmates epitomize a “soon-to-be-extinct species.” But with a huge summer tour in the offing and a fascinating new album, at least these particular rock stars don’t seem to be going the way of the Syrian wild ass—or Tower Records—anytime soon.

Michelle, whose work has helped garner spin awards from such tastemakers as American Photography and the Society of Publication Designers, flew to Dublin to oversee this month’s cover shoot and discovered a band “tremendously at ease with one another—they have a brotherly rapport.” She admits she had an additional goal: “I wanted a photo with Bono touching my belly. At the end of the shoot, I got the nerve to ask, and he happily obliged.” All of us at spin congratulate Michelle and her husband, Jamie, on their bundle of joy, due April 21 (though you can likely find it leaked online by the end of March).

For deputy editor Steve Kandell, who wrote the story, seeing U2 at Madison Square Garden with his father in 1985 was a game-changer (“Fans were still singing in unison on Seventh

Avenue a half hour after the show”).

And Steve and his wife, Megan, will have similar opportunities to enlighten. They’re expecting a boy in June.

And the query above? It’s a trick question that Michelle’s or Steve’s child would find redundant. As all of us in this office know, it’s their parents who are the rock stars. doug brod
