Hell Yeah Just opened my mailbox and found the Yeah Yeah Yeahs staring at me [“Stayin’ Alive,” March]. “Yay!” I said out loud. And “yay” I say again. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve been this excited looking at spin’s cover. Why can’t every band be as good as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

Kudos to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
for branching out with It’s
Blitz!, but Karen o came across
as just a wee bit dictatorial in
her approach to writing the
new record. Commanding nick
Zinner to put down his ax and
stick to synths? It’s a gutsy move
and an interesting challenge, but
the “painful” recording sessions
of 2006’s Show Your Bones bred
much better material than this
year’s complacent dancefest.

red lorry Yellow lorry. But it would probably have been better to include more albums than singles collections, and snubbing Christian death’s Only Theatre of Pain is a crime. But the biggest problem is that there’s nothing new! The Astonished Eyes of Evening, by Cinema Strange, from 2002, is the best goth album since the Cure’s Disintegration. And there’s a plethora of other worthy artists, like Android lust, Collide, and Bella Morte. no one gives modern goth the respect it deserves.

as your article [“Straight outta the Closet,” March] suggests. Kanye West has publicly condemned homophobia in the genre, representing a benchmark in shifting attitudes. I’ve seen straight men blasting Yo! Majesty (a lesbian duo) from their escalades. even eminem has toned down the homophobia in his latest cuts. The times they are a-changin’, and as long as the music’s good, there will be an audience for it.

I dug the March issue. Those neko Case and Alex Kapranos interviews were cool, and pretty much everything relating to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is intriguing, right? But I was kind of bummed over the essential Goth list. Minus 20 scene points for sticking to greatest-hits comps.
