cocktails to Vegas’ best dressed, while DJ Josh Madden
and the resident burlesque dancers entertained.

W hen we found out last February that Jack White was on the verge of announcing yet another new band, it’s fair to say that much of the spin staff let out a collective “WTF?” Having already established himself as perhaps our most fascinating rock star when he emerged at the

turn of the millennium as singer-guitarist of the White Stripes, in 2005 White satisfied his jones for ’70s-style hard rock as cofrontman (with Brendan Benson) of the Raconteurs. Now, for his latest project, the Dead Weather (which features Kills singer Alison Mosshart as well as one full- and one part-time Raconteur), White moves to the back, as drummer. Thankfully, his restlessness—not to mention tirelessness—has resulted in an extraordinary debut album called Horehound.

At their first public gig last April, at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom, the Dead Weather were a swampy blast, with Mosshart a sexy, sinewy presence and White a thumping revelation. But it’s also worth noting that the night’s biggest ovation came when the ringleader stepped out front to play guitar and duet with Mosshart on “Will There Be Enough Water.” Old habits, we guess.

For this month’s cover feature, “Gang of Four,” music editor Charles Aaron went down to Nashville to get the complete Dead Weather origin story and offers an intriguing glimpse into White’s new, fantastical Third Man Records headquarters.

The band is expected to start touring in June and throughout the summer, with a stop at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in August. As for festivals past, this month we offer Soundcheck shots from both South by Southwest and Coachella; look for expanded Coachella photo galleries on spin.com and in our digital edition at digital.spin.com.
