DAY 1

Since her band the Distillers broke up in 2005, Brody Dalle has been busier than her discography might suggest. She had a daughter, camille, three years ago with husband Josh homme of Queens of the Stone Age, and more recently, she’s been whipping up songs with longtime Queens collaborator Alain Johannes for her self-titled debut as Spinnerette. Being an independent artist— after years on Warner Bros., Dalle is putting her new album out on canadian indie Anthem—means you gotta do a lot of the legwork. But for Dalle, 30, self-sufficiency is a privilege, not a chore. “We’re very lucky that we’ve been able to create this kind of atmosphere for ourselves,” she says after letting SPIN tag along for a day and a half of band-related errands around L.A. with her guitarist Tony Bevilacqua. “We really took advantage of that and made sure we had a stable environment we could go to, you know?” We do.

“I treated my body
like a garbage
truck for years, so I
punish myself with
this drink called
the Green Monster:
an entire celery,
two cucumbers,
a huge bunch of

kale, and parsley. It’s gnarly, but it’ll clean the inside of your arteries.”

middleman. We met with Ian Rogers, who used to be the head of Yahoo Music and is really into Kiss. I hate Kiss, but I don’t hold it against him. He had a Damien Hirst skull USB drive. I can’t remember what band it’s for—it’s rad.”

“I have a real love-hate relationship with L. A. People either come out here to die or to become a star.”
