A Muse-bouche

You guys have done it once again. I was pleasantly surprised when MGMT were on the cover last November and nothing short of flabbergasted to see Muse [“Pomp and Circumstance”] filling the same spot in September. These are some of my very favorite bands—I love that you give these amazing artists some recognition.

TIFFANY BECKLER

Muse make rock the way it’s supposed to be: big, loud, and unconcerned with looking “cool.” It’s only a matter of time before more people realize they don’t need to listen to classic-rock radio to hear music that can stand alongside the greats of the ’70s and ’80s. They can listen to Muse.

ALEX BROWNING

Charlotte, North Carolina

Not only has the “Not Big Enough in America” tag been worked over many times, it’s ridiculous. There isn’t a good-

sized venue in America that Muse couldn’t sell out while charging between $50 and $100 a head. If selling out stadiums and arenas is really your goal as a band, then that’s fine, but as a fan, there’s nothing more detached and impersonal than shows of that size. How exciting can it be to see tiny people dancing under pretty lights from 80 yards away?

JASON JOHNSON

Murfreesboro, Tennessee

French Press I hadn’t read much about them before, but it turns out that Phoenix [“Rise and Shine,” September] are a charming, talented, and ridiculously catchy rock band—and they’re French? It feels weird to like these guys as much as I do!

CAL WAGMAN

Bangor, Maine

Paramore Amour

Thanks for publishing a smart review of the new Paramore record [“Phonies, Go Home,” September]. I would’ve given the record ten out of ten instead of the eight out of ten that your critic Mikael Wood gave it, but it was nice to see Hayley and the band treated with the respect they deserve—and too many girl-fronted bands don’t get.

SEAN CARSCADDEN
Sonoma, California

Clarification A ;;;; Mix item about the Dodos in the September issue incorrectly listed the title and label of the band’s new album Time to Die (Frenchkiss).
