IN LISTENING
Ranking on Pop Culture Since 1998
What album most reminds you of teenage angst? Japan’s Quiet Life. I bought it in a store with my dad when I was 11. They were whitefaced, long-haired boys, and I was a bit of a melancholy child, so their gothic wailing suited me. Is there an American band as good as the Beatles or the Stones? That bar might be too high. I would say Creedence Clearwater Revival, but then some people I know whom I don’t like are fans of them, and it’s put me o;. Not that I’m a petty or angry man. What was the last concert you attended? I went to see Tokyo Police Club in London last year. They invited me after I Twittered about them. Tokyo Police Club are what the Strokes could have been if the Strokes hadn’t stopped being the Strokes. A Lesson in Crime is a great 35-minute album, which is perfect if you’ve got a short attention span like I do. Who puts you in touch with your feminine side? Lady-hawke. I have a thing for women soloists, like Bat for Lashes and Little
Boots, so i Tunes recommended her to me. Whenever I put on “My
Delirium,” I want to punch the air. Name a song that you’ve listened to in the last 24 hours. “Shiver,” by
George Benson. I just bought his best-of. If I were going to run a roller disco, I’d want to put this on. Do you and frequent costar Simon Pegg listen to the same bands? He doesn’t like my taste because I’ve always been a big fan of hard house music. My parents were very liberal, so I was going to raves when I was 15. Sadly, I can’t go anymore, thanks to the invention of the camera phone. I have to settle for playing the Frantic 11 compilation. Who were you listening to the first time you smoked pot?
Public Enemy. I think it was “Don’t Believe the
Hype.” I seem to remember Flav’s big fat clock.
What song did you first slow-dance to? “Care-
less Whisper,” by George Michael. I fancied a girl
named Natasha, and I heard from the network
of gossips that she fancied me. As the song
reached its crescendo— “Tonight the music
seems so loud / I wish that we could lose
this crowd”—she leant forward and we
had a little kiss, and then she rubbed
her mouth and said, “Ewww.”
Who would you want to play in
a biopic? Well, I’d want to play
Jimi Hendrix, but obviously
that’s a problem. My shape
would push me more
toward Frank Black.
