but if a full one were to disappear, I would freak out. I get such a sense of satisfaction after filling one up, even if a song didn’t come from it.”

MTV studios
“We did four songs
at MTV. It’s very
different perform-
ing in a studio like
that without any
audience. You have to
do lots of retakes and
nail the same energy
each time, which is
challenging. Then
again, you can better
concentrate on what
you’re actually pro-
jecting. After all that,
I went home—big day
ahead of me.”

Tour bus en route
to Reading
“It’s my birthday. Our
drum tech Robin got
me these flowers.
That’s Rob [Ackroyd,
guitarist], who has
been with me the
longest—it was just
me and him for ages.
The way I keep my
sanity, cooped up on
a tour bus, is to bring
along things from
home, like my vintage
shawl, and to go for
long walks during
stops and find
museums and stuff.”
12:05 P.M. NME/Radio 1 stage, Reading “The first thing we had to do at Reading was a short acoustic set, just a couple songs for Radio 1. Then more and more interviews throughout the day. I played Reading last year but wasn’t nearly as busy—it’s part of the deal.”
